La Campana de Tabacos, Inc. celebrates its 50th Anniversary.
1995

Nelia Wongchuking thanks the employees for their dedication, loyalty and effort during the 50th anniversary celebration last September 20, 1995.

The family funded the construction of the new Yuxi health station.

La Campana celebrated their 55th year anniversary last September 20, 2000 at the Barrio Tikay, Malolos factory compound.
2000

June 25, 2001, a fire breaks out at Sterling Tobacco's production factory in Mandaluyong City.

Sterling Tobacco's menthol cigarettes, such as Miller, Kent, Bowling Green, Bowling Gold, and Rave are very popular brands in the provinces.

Mighty Corporation becomes a natural choice to manufacture for Sterling Tobacco in the absence of their factory.

Mighty Corporation and Sterling Tobacco enter into a contract manufacturing agreement. This agreement becomes the miracle pill that saves Mighty Corporation from the verge of total financial collapse.
2001

Mighty was able to carry out the next phase in the modernization of their production plants. They replaced their second-hand cigarette production machines with modern, high-yield, and low maintenance Protos machine made by Hauni, a leading German tobacco machinery maker.

The upgrade enabled Mighty to produce top-caliber cigarettes at an optimal pace as the quality of cigarette products are directly related to the capacity of the production machines.

Concurrent with the modernization going on, Mighty started building its American-blended filtered cigarette portfolio.
2002

Philip Morris Philippines bought the trademarks of Sterling Tobacco and retained the contract manufacturing agreement with Mighty Corporation until 2005.

Another CMA with Singaporean fast-moving consumer goods conglomerate, Lubritrade Pte Ltd., ensued. This stipulated the production of cigarette brands to be sold in the island markets of Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia, and Malaysia.

The consistent and growing revenue streams allowed Mighty to purchase more modern machines, this time, for their lamina and stem processing lines from the Kunming Shipbuilding Equipment Co. Ltd., a tobacco machinery and automatic logistics system manufacturer based in China.
2002

The 60th anniversary celebration of La Campana was held in Makati last 2005. Bulacan plant employees were ferried to the head office to celebrate their 60 decades of business.
2005

Bloomberg Cargo and Cold Storage, Inc. was established.

The family also invested in a cold storage facility, Everest Cold Storage, Inc., in Iloilo, a major hub in Western Visayas.

Mighty Corporation purchased their first G.D. packing machine, a high-speed cigarette packing machine.

They upgraded their sales and marketing teams with a new fleet of Mitsubishi and Isuzu light trucks.

Mighty Corporation's facilities were equipped with the latest innovations in tobacco industry engineering and production.

Their automated equipment streamlined all their manufacturing processes. Mighty Corporation's export operations in South East Asia and the Middle East improved their product mix and generated steady and positive cash flows and margins.

Within the decade, the management team, composed of new recruits and loyal employees, was able to steer the company into a fully-integrated (manufacturing, marketing, and distribution) cigarette business.

Alex Wongchuking personally traveled Mighty’s sales routes together with his managers and agents to sell their mass-friendly low-priced cigarette products in order to understand the market.
2007

In September 2010, two local cigarette giants created a joint-venture, resulting in a dominant 90% market share.

Mighty Corporation's parallel operations on its low-priced American-blended cigarettes grew exponentially.

Thanks to its robust sales and distribution network in the provinces, Mighty Corporation became the second largest cigarette manufacturer in the Philippines.

The 65th anniversary celebration was held at the Makati compound. The event was graced by family, relatives, employees and their countless guests who make sure that every celebration is a memorable one.

(Famous Last Speech)

“Apart from helping his hometown in any way he could, his other lifelong dream was to build a school for the children of his village. In fact, he would always think about their future and what he can do to help. As his family, we always admired and respected his vision, that is why we carried out the school hall’s construction even after his passing.”

LEADERSHIP

WONG CHU KING

The Founder

King, who was born in China but migrated to the Philippines to seek greener pastures, found himself suffering alone as war broke out. It was during the war years that he witnessed the fall of Manila, the horrible deaths, shattered lives and families separated in combat.

Surviving those difficult years, he vowed to help Filipinos rebuild their lives.

He put up a small factory named La Campana Fabrica de Tabacos that ventured into the
cigarette business. It was tough at first.- he did almost everything from blending the tobacco to being a salesman, delivery man, collector, cashier, and product promoter. His perseverance and sacrifice paid off as the business grew.

When he married a Filipina named Nelia, he found in her a partner who helped him expand into other businesses such as tobacco processing, rice milling, buying and selling of goods, insurance and construction. The company name was also changed to Mighty Corporation (MC).

Today, MC is a fully integrated tobacco company located at a 9-hectare property in Malolos, Bulacan. The area includes a complete threshing and redrying plant, which supply the necessary requirements for MC’s cigarette manufacturing operations.

Unleashing the Power of Selflessness and Self-Denial: The Inspiring Journey of Alexander Dy Wongchuking

In business, countless strategies and systems are devised to achieve success. However, amidst the sea of theories, one fundamental truth remains paramount: selflessness and self-denial hold the key to unlocking the true potential of any system. This powerful revelation has guided the extraordinary journey of Alexander Dy Wongchuking, a visionary leader whose name has become synonymous with dedication, perseverance, and compassion.
Alexander’s upbringing was rooted in strong family values and a nurturing environment. From a young age, he imbibed the essence of selflessness, learning that success is an individual pursuit and a shared journey with those around you. This early foundation laid the groundwork for his future endeavors as he embarked on personal and professional growth.
Born as the fifth child in a family of three boys and three girls, he was educated at Xavier School in San Juan, followed by graduation from Colegio de San Juan de Letran; Alexander’s academic journey shaped his intellect and character. But it was his entry into the world of business that truly defined his legacy. At the helm of Wong Chu King Holdings, he demonstrated exemplary leadership that hinged on leading by example and championing self-denial.
Having joined the company in 1980, when he was just 22 or 23, Alexander’s journey has been marked by numerous challenges and surviving three life-threatening challenges.
As the most notorious among his siblings, he faced adversity head-on and persevered. His experiences taught him that every challenge is a divine lesson, a preparation for a greater purpose. This profound belief in God’s plan instilled in him an unwavering resolve to lead with humility and selflessness.
Within Wong Chu King Holdings, Alexander fostered a culture of moral values. He understood
true leadership is not about flaunting authority but inspiring others to embrace self-denial and sacrifice for the greater good. By embodying these principles, he earned his employees’ and managers’ respect and trust, even during difficult times when some might have questioned his approach.
Alexander’s favorite quote, “God grants me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference, one day at a time,” reflects his profound faith and wisdom. It serves as a beacon of light during challenging moments, reminding him to stay humble, accept what he cannot control, and courageously take action when possible.
As a leader, Alexander envisions a future that honors his parents’ legacy, the founders of Wong Chu King Holdings. Their inspiration propels him to face conflicts with grace and self-restraint, embracing self-denial as the ultimate sacrifice for the greater vision. Balancing his life’s personal and professional aspects, he realizes that his influence extends far beyond the boardroom; it impacts the lives of his employees and the entire organization.
